ASUS' New 'Ally' Gaming Handheld Is No Joke And Available For Pre-Order Soon

ASUS has confirmed that it is launching the ROG Ally handheld gaming console, which is expected to compete with Valve's Steam Deck. After inappropriately releasing a trailer on April 1, the company recently took to social media to confirm that its announcement was not an April Fool's joke. In fact, pre-orders will be available soon, and you can sign up now to be notified when it happens at Best Buy.

According to YouTuber Dave2D, who received the first technical sample, the ROG Ally will feature AMD's own 4nm chip based on the Zen 4 architecture and RDNA 3. In addition, ASUS claims that the ROG Ally will offer twice the performance of the Steam Deck and can connect to the company's external GPU product. ROG XG Mobile eGPU. Once connected, the device can display your games on the big screen (you can play with external controls) and charge at the same time.

Other features revealed include a 7-inch 16:9 display with 1080p resolution. That's roughly the same size as the Steam Deck display, but beats the 1280 x 800 resolution and 16:10 aspect ratio of Valve's handheld. The ROG Ally's screen is also brighter at 500 nits (compared to the Steam Deck's 400 nits) and achieves a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, beating its competitor's 60Hz.

Ally sounds like a solid handheld gaming option

With such a powerful APU and more pixels to power, ASUS has devoted considerable R&D time to the cooling solution. The Ally will have a dual-fan design that is said to be quiet. Dave2D estimates the Ally's fan noise to be around 20db compared to the Steam Deck's 37db, and while we're not sure how scientific his test was, a video comparison between the two makes it clear that there is a significant difference.

Since the ROG Ally runs natively on Windows 11, you'll basically have the choice between any gaming service you want when it comes to getting games, including Steam, Xbox Game Pass, or the Epic Games Store. ASUS will also have its own Armory Crate software loaded, which organizes your games in an intuitive user interface and offers controls to optimize your gaming experience. The price is "very competitive", although it's hard to imagine it being cheaper or the same as the Steam Deck, given the significant advantages. We'll have to wait for ASUS to announce global availability details for the full picture.
