AI careers of the future
ChatGPT search interest has seen a 2,633% increase in interest since last December, shortly after its launch. For the AI and machine learning industry, and for those working in technology as a whole, the OpenAI chatbot represents a true crossing of the Rubicon.
A generative form of AI uses challenges to create content and conversations, while traditional AI focuses on things like pattern detection, decision making, or data classification. We already benefit from artificial intelligence, whether we realize it or not – from Siri in our Apple phones, to the options Netflix or Amazon Prime makes available for us, to the personalization and cyber protection behind our commercial interactions.
ChatGPT is just one of a growing number of generative AI tools, including Bing Chat and Google Bard. DeepMind's Alpha Code writes computer programs at a competitive level; Jasper is an AI texter and DALL-E, MidJourney and Stable Diffusion can create realistic images and art from the description you give them.
As a result, generative AI is now firmly entrenched in the mainstream consciousness, thanks in large part to ChatGPT's easy-to-use interface and its ability to produce results that can be as amazing as they are ridiculous. Want it to generate some Python code? Sure thing - and it can make you a funny Limerick if you want.
How generative AI will affect the job market
According to Salesforce, 57% of senior IT leaders believe generative AI is a game-changer, and because it's intuitive and useful, end users like it.
While your job may be safe from AI (for now), the content generated by ChatGPT made it to the top 20% of all candidates selected for a communications consultant role at marketing company Schwa, and also passed the Google Engineering Coding Level 3 interview.
Roles likely to resist the onset of generative AI include graphic designers, programmers (although they are likely to adopt AI tools to speed up their process), and blockchain developers, but many other jobs are likely to be performed by AI in the (near) future.
These include customer service tasks – chatbots can do this effectively. Accounting or accounts management roles are likely to be replaced as many of these tasks can be performed by software. In manufacturing, millions of jobs will be replaced by smart machines that will do the same work, but faster.
But while AI may replace some jobs, it will also create many new ones.
The World Economic Forum predicts that this technology will create 97 million new jobs by 2025. Jobs specifically related to the development and maintenance of artificial intelligence and automation will be increasingly used as AI is integrated into various industries.
These can include data sleuths or scientists, agile engineers, robotics engineers, machine managers and programmers, especially those who can code in Python, which is key to AI development. We are also looking for AI trainers and people with skills related to modeling, computational intelligence, machine learning, mathematics, psychology, linguistics and neuroscience.
Healthcare also looks set to benefit, with PwC estimating that AI-enabled healthcare technician jobs will see upward growth. One sector that is already creating new jobs is automated transportation, with Tesla, Uber and Google investing billions in self-driving cars and trucks with artificial intelligence.
If you want to work in AI right now, there are plenty of jobs available. Discover three below or check out the House of Talent job board for many more opportunities.
