Reddit is one of the most popular social media platforms because it has great systems that stimulate content creation and engagement.
One such system is the Moons token, which was introduced to reward millions of Reddit users with real-world monetary value for their posts. Luckily, it's easy to understand how Moons work and get some if you're a Redditor.
What are Reddit Months?
Moons are tokens on Reddit that users can earn and spend within the social network. They were introduced in May 2020 to reward the millions of Reddit users for their content contributions and accumulated reputation.
Reddit has other incentives to encourage content creation, notably Reddit Karma Credits, which are earned through posting, commenting, or awards. However, Karma credits had no monetary value.
Months have a monetary value that can be decided by the market. More specifically, Reddit Moons are ERC-20 tokens on a Layer-2 solution called Arbitrum Nova that enables fast and cheap Ethereum transactions.
What is Reddit Vault?
Vault is an Ethereum wallet where Moons are stored. It's built into the Reddit app (available for iOS and Android) and is the main way Reddit users see their balance and spend their months. Another way to access Moons is through your computer browser, using your vault password and push notifications on your phone.
Vaults act as cryptocurrency wallets; they generate a public address that stores the Moons and a private key that allows access to the Moons. If you lose access to your device, Reddit offers the option to restore your vault in your account. It also has access to your public address, which is used when sending rewards.
How do Reddit Moons work?
Moon runs on Ethereum and is the official cryptocurrency for the r/CryptoCurrency subreddit. By design, they are compatible with all applications and resources built on the Ethereum Virtual Machine.
They are pseudonymous, meaning you cannot know the identity of the owners. They are also owned and controlled by users, independent of Reddit, and once earned, no one can take them away.
How do you earn reddit months?
Reddit Moons fuel quality activity in the r/CryptoCurrency subreddit. So you get moons depending on your post, moons available and subreddit rules.
Sharing original, high-quality content that attracts discussion within the subreddit is the most effective way to earn Moons. When people engage with your posts, they will vote for you. The difference between your gross upvotes and downvotes, i.e. net upvotes, determines your karma credits, which determine the months you get.
In addition to sharing high-quality content, you can earn Moons by making insightful and meaningful comments on other posts and comments. Funny, provocative, or insightful comments attract upvotes and add to your post's overall score.
Additionally, there are community-decided karma modification rules that can increase the number of months earned. A full list of modifiers can be seen on the Moons Wiki. For example, you can get twice as many months for posts on posts marked [Serious], twice as many months for comments, and a five percent bonus for voting in admin polls (which decide the direction of the subreddit).
How are Reddit months distributed?
Months are distributed through a system known as "community points". First, moderators decide on the number of months they will award for various activities within a particular subreddit. This means that the number of months awarded may vary from subreddit to subreddit.
Posts by redditors within a particular subreddit are weighted using an algorithm that checks for quality and quantity and are assigned a post score. The algorithm then divides the months based on the proportion of subreddit post scores earned by active users.
Months are distributed once every 28 days. While previously users had to claim their assets after each round, the scalability upgrade allowed users to automatically claim their Moons if their vaults were set up well.
How was Moons scalability problem solved?
Initially developed on Ethereum, Moons inherited the blockchain's scalability challenges. The distribution of Moons was a slow and inefficient process, and users had to actively claim their tokens on a regular basis.
However, that changed when Reddit integrated Arbitrum Nova, a Layer-2 network designed specifically for gaming and social applications while increasing the speed and efficiency of Ethereum transactions.
Through this upgrade, Reddit reduced the transaction fees associated with the distribution of Moons and did so immediately. Redditors no longer have to wait to claim their Moons. In addition, the upgrade allowed for batch transactions, making distribution much more efficient than before.
How to use Reddit Moons
Months can be used for a variety of purposes within the Reddit ecosystem.
Buy a special membership: You can use Moons to secure a monthly entry to the r/CryptoCurrency subreddit. This paywall was prompted by the rapid growth of the subreddit, which attracted underage and inactive members. Paywall costs 1,000 months or $5 per month. As a special member, you can have colorful usernames, loyalty and stylized badges, animated emoticons and GIFs in your comments.
Boosting Poll Answers: Moons can help highlight popular poll answers. For example, Reddit allows members to use Moons to approve posts and comments, which helps amplify the opinions of the majority of members and make it clear what is more valuable to the community. A good example of this was the 15th to 18th round of voting on the moon, which contains a series of surveys about the incentive system.
Tipping: Moons can be used to tip other content creators. Like Karma Credits, tip months are a token of appreciation for the effort you put into creating valuable content and encourage more contributions. In fact, there has been a growing trend called Moon Farming, where professionals quit their jobs to become active full-time contributors with strategies and steady income from the cryptocurrency subreddit.
Outside of the Reddit ecosystem, Moons can be exchanged for cryptocurrencies using platforms like xDai and Honeyswap, or for fiat currencies.
Burning Moons on Reddit
Reddit moons are burned as part of the deflationary mechanism. They are withdrawn from circulation, ensuring that distribution will not be limited to new issues. Burning involves sending them to the burning address, but they can be reintroduced for distribution later.
Moons burn in two ways; buying premium memberships or redeeming moons for Reddit coins. In both cases, they are sent directly to the burning address when the transaction is initiated. Meanwhile, admins burn months on your behalf as you pay premium memberships in cash.
